As a student of the Gaelic language, I will think twice about choosing Colaisde na Gàidhlig as a learning destination in the future if the name change persists, as the leadership seems so clearly out of step with the local Gaelic community.

The Gaelic College was built & supported by protestant highlanders from the Hebrides that were forced from Scotland due to the clearances. The creation of the college was an effort by these forbears to protect their culture & language from English assimilation. It is inappropriate that the "Royal" be appended to this institution.

Anyone who has an iota of historical consciousness, that linguistic imperialism was a well thought out policy to divorce a people from their unique identity. No impartial reading of the history would count the British monarchy as a patron of Gaelic.

I don't agree with the National Mòd in Scotland changing its name to the Royal National Mòd either. If the queen is giving the Gaelic College at St. Anns a million pound a year in support, well, I can understand changing the name. But nae danger!

Inserting the 'Royal' designation is totally inappropriate. Possibly acceptable on a jar of jam, but not on a Gaelic college.
