The Right to Use Social Media During WSSU Campaign
This petition is formed to
advocate on behalf of the student voice.
Since the 2013-2014 Student Government Association and Royal court
elections, candidates for these offices have not been able to use social media
as a campaign tool. In a generation
where social media thrives and is used for various objectives, the student body
of Winston Salem State University feels as if their student voice is being
oppressed and prohibiting candidates of this tool is
dismantling creative control. Social Media will not
only reach various student populations but also serve as a marketing tool for
our dear university. Social media usage also promotes the objectives of SGA and
Royal Court. This, in turn, increases the desirability of the offices, thus
aiding in the efforts to increase Ram Pride a cross the student body. Although
the objective of the ordinance was to promote personal engagement, prohibiting
social media harms the student involvement we need to advance as a university.
Social media is imperative in a world of new age technology and modern
communication.
