This was an unacceptably nearly fatal move for Reddit, in what looks like a petty attempt at driving revenue up by driving quality down and replacing it with indignant commercialization. Pao should have been the one relieved of position, as this move was entirely out of touch and completely counter to goals and direction of Reddit.
