Since the petition was drawn up, a travel ban on academics has been announced and Turkish academics abroad have been summoned home to face who knows what. This is dreadful, I fear for my Turkish colleagues and friends.

Can this be for real? Sounds like some crazy movie hypothetical. And to think that the situation has so much sway over Obama... I'm at a loss... But an attack on academia and free thought, is an attack on civilization and humanity. Sounds like an inquisition.

Mr. Erdoğan, your actions represent a sheer violation of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, in clear breach of the Turkish Constitution and International Treaties' obligations. If Atatürk is remembered as the father of the Turkish nation which I deeply love, you most probably will go down in history as its tyrannic destroyer, in case you don't reverse the course of action and start respecting constitutional freedoms and human rights. Yazık!
