Mr Erdogan, in the first few years as mayor of Istanbul and then as prime minister, you did many good and important things, improved the economy, cleaned up the streets, provided jobs for millions. Now unfortunately you have lost all sense of proportion, and it is time for you to step down from your office before you corrupt it completely.

There should be no place for the suppression of human rights and academic freedom in the 21st Century. Our world is interconnected more than ever, so what happens in Turkey concerns me. And I'm deeply troubled by the purge of academic institutions in Turkey.

I spent a lovely month with researchers at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul several years ago as part of the eNTERFACE EU research project. Please ensure that academic freedom is preserved in Turkey so that these kinds of important academic exchanges can continue to occur.

Turkey has had world class Universities. One that I graduated from in fact. Academic freedom is critical for scholars to thrive and maintain this standard. Critics are necessary for keeping a democratic nation healthy and at its best.
