Whether or not Erdogan staged the coup, he has seized upon it with gusto to consolidate his despotic grip over Turkey. The country has always been highly imperfect as a liberal democracy, but it is now rapidly becoming an outright tyranny.

As an ordinary citizen of the UK I would ask the Turkish Government to respect all its citizen rights, and remember that the rule of law is the bedrock of Democracy.

As a faculty member who has colleagues in Turkey, I am deeply concerned about recent actions and the future of Turkey's higher education. Our University sends students each spring to Istanbul. . This action will negatively impact our wonderful exchange program in Istanbul and curtail our rich exchanges with Turkish teachers and students.
