Those of us who were glad to see the coup not overthrow democracy are appalled to see a democratically elected leader overthrowing democratic norms.

as a scholar, I condemn this purge of the Turkish academy. As an historian, I know it will only harm the Turkish people. As a human being, I ask you to stop.

Erdogan is using his democratically elected position to undermine Democracy, and with this fake coup has moved the country further toward fascism. Tragic.

If President Erdogan truly values the stability and future of his country, he must preserve academic freedom. I am privileged to know and have worked with professors and students from Turkey's universities, and they are the best ambassadors of their country, proving themselves invaluable to the global community, and creating a vibrant domestic font of creativity, innovation, and strength. True power does not fear, and President Erdogan and the AKP should not fear their own academic community. They can only benefit from fostering a robust, independent academic system that links Turkey to the global academic community and ensures that Turkey has a voice in the world.

The iron fist that is being brought down en masse- beyond member of the actual coup attempt, is dictatorial and suggests that the leader of Turkey is not strong enough to engage in lively debate with worthy opponents. He is proving to be unworthy, himself.

Erdogan has shown his weakness in stifling satire and humor directed his way- clearly a weakness in character. Now sharing our educators? Astonishing lack of understanding of world history. He is a tyrant.

Erdogan is clearly using the "coup" to destroy any remaining liberties in Turkey. The US. should denounce him and cut off all aid.

The purging of educators and intellectuals in Turkey is a deplorable move towards a state of dictatorship. I protest most strongly in solidarity with the teachers and academics.
