As a novelist working often with universities all over the world, I see it as an unacceptable totalitarian measure, damaging to all of Turkey and thus the world, to curtail the democratic freedom of academic institutions by mass removing the professors they depend upon. ... can only be considered in itself another kind of 'coup'.!

True freedom means freedom of speech, thought, knowledge, and ideas, including those we do not like.

We do not have the right to be spectators! All democratic citizens around the globe must raise our voices because it is only education that can give hope for the future. What is being done in Turkey affects us all regardless of geography...

We should at least try.

No academic freedom, no press freedom = no democracy

Academics are essential for free and critical thought in any country. Restricting their movement and firing (all!) deans indiscriminately can only mean you are afraid of independent minds. It is a sure sign that Turkey is moving towards a totalitarian dictatorship. Save your democracy and stop this disgrace
