The integrity of the academy is the hallmark of a healthy society. As an academician, I have had the pleasure to interact with fellow scholars from Turkish universities and find it disturbing that one very important means for us to continue a free exchange of ideas and research methodologies is taken away. More disturbing still are those whom I would consider professional colleagues who have been dismissed from their positions or awakened to find that their institutions have been summarily closed down. This is a line that a democratic society dare not cross. Without an academy free of political pressure, rather than education students can expect mere propaganda. Rather than science, students can expect nothing more than science fiction. I know first hand that the Turkish people are far better than this. I hope the Turkish government will do the right thing and live up to its people rather than destroy the very institutions that enable its people to thrive.

I join my colleagues in the disgraceful, unsubstantiated military attacks directed against the continuing function of academics in Turkey
