"The Need for Academic Freedom"
The Statement of Community of Scholars in Kurdish Studies

Past developments concerning academic freedom of scholars have compelled us to put forth a statement in defence of the universal principle of academic freedom. We resolutely reaffirm our dedication to the foundational tenets of freedom of expression, paramount not only in the construct of democratic societies but also deeply rooted in the historical tapestry of the Kurdish community. We uphold and advance intellectual and academic freedom essential to the larger issues of freedom both intellectually and morally.

As a collective entity of scholars, we advocate the principles of freedom of expression, democratic values, and the cultivation of an environment that cherishes a spectrum of perspectives in which critical discourse and understanding is the underlying principle; we cultivate and sustain these principles both as imperative and desirable in our research and teaching; consequently, our quest for knowledge and critique should be seen as an endeavour to promote scholarly refinement and academic values and freedom, freedom that needs protection from any reprisals, infringements, threats or constraints, imposed by state or non-state actors.

In acknowledging the historical past and present injustices faced by the Kurdish people, we extend our gratitude to those who have toiled indefatigably, either individually or collectively, to create a world governed by democratic principles and discourses. Our work as educators and researchers would also be inconceivable without intellectual autonomy and a nurturing environment that promotes inclusion, and justice. and intellectual diversity.

As advocates of democracy, we recognize and emphasize the freedom of critics to present their research findings as the imperative of a collective commitment to democratic values, the discourse of deference, and a milieu of civility. We firmly believe that our endeavours can wield a profound influence on the political landscape of Kurdistan towards a society that is both equitable and free. In this pursuit, diverse perspectives signify not frailty, but rather a strength, propelling us toward a more inclusive and democratic future.
