The Moving of Auto Mechanic and Culinary programs from Southern High School

This is an obviously unfair move. Instead of bussing SHS students from the facilities that are already equipped to teach these skills, why is money being spent to equip another space and bus students to a location that needs completed in time for next year? Was it even considered to bus NHS students, a much smaller population, to SHS to take these classes in classrooms and labs that are already in place? It is no further to bus them to SHS than to bus SHS to the Tech Center and would take fewer busses. This destroys the schedules (pathways that have been in place since grade 9) of only SHS students some of which may need remediation for state assessments or extra classes for credits to graduate, as well as the dual completers who are in honors, merit , or AP students who will now have to chose which way to go due to excessive travel time. And about that travel time, how is it fair that some students will have eight classes and opportunities to earn credits and some can only attempt six? Also, will these two teachers, if you can get an auto mechanics teacher, have a nurse on premises? These are two of the most dangerous classes that students can take. Also, will they have an administrator on premises full time? Is it even legal to have classes just stuck in a building without any support? Also, for students who have IEPs, will assistants have to travel? Will they be given mileage? Travel time? Lunch ? How does that work? This seems like a very illogical and expensive decision that has not been fully considered or vetted.

These programs are a great opportunity for kids to explore other vocational options. Moving them would limit the ability for students to try these classes because of how much it would cut into their required courses. I know several people who have taken these classes all 4 years of high school and have gone into culinary and automotive careers because they developed a passion for it in these programs.

Please do not do this. There have been enough challenges in the last two years. There will be enough other changes most likely.

Please consider finding a more efficient solution for impacted students. We say we want to attract good students to trades, so let’s build attractive plans.

Please reconsider this decision. Our kids need access to experience trade school types of learning. Our country is crumbling away due to our schools making people believe that college is the only way to go. We need this experience for our kids, please don’t take it away. It will also be nearly impossible to meet the graduation requirements if they aren’t able to take 4 classes in a semester.
