PLEASE SUPPORT THIS PETITION for the good of all current and future citizens of Blacksburg:
We the undersigned petitioners ask the Blacksburg Town Council to:
1. Support neighbors and neighborhoods.
2. Vote "NO" to the current Legacy Project proposed for the corner of Country Club Drive and South Main Street --142 bedrooms, up to 280 residents, four stories along Main Street with minimal setbacks. The current proposal is too dense, too tall, does not adequately address unsafe conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles and is not compatible with surrounding neighborhoods.
3. Ask the developer to work in community with neighborhoods to reduce density and provide the proper setbacks to facilitate future improvements along the developer's property at Country Club Drive and Main Street.

The petition reached 100 signatures this morning. I am finalizing a formal letter to the Blacksburg Town Council outlining our specific concerns regarding density and safety to be delivered before the next public hearing.

I was in an accident at the intersection of Country Club and S. Main St. where my car was totaled in October 2020; a student ran a red light. The intersection is already too busy and adding that many housing units there would be a poor move.
I have been a resident of Blacksburg since 1977. I am opposed to this hideous addition to Main Street. It is not an appropriate design for Blacksburg an could not possibly fit into any well thought out project and appears to violate existing plans for Blacksburg.
Please listen to the citizens that live and work in this area. We are not against affordable housing or this project but PLEASE REDUCE the number of units and make it compatible with the Town's vision. You can NOT undo this once problems begin.
Planning commission acknowledges Country Club is already narrow for cujrrent traffic. Adding another 100 cars daily is simply unsafe on the only ingress to the development. If you have to jam it, don't plan it. Vote no on this project.
MAINTAIN THE CURRENT R5 ZONING. I fully support affordable housing in Blacksburg and agree that the property at South Main and Country Club is a good location for affordable housing that MEETS THE CURRENT ZONING REQUIREMENTS.
This will be a huge safety issue due to traffic overload.
Do not pretend this is about doing lower income people a good turn by housing them in a concrete box with little or no green space at this busy intersection. This is about turning a profit and hoping to look good doing it. We have zoning for a reason.

The narrow setbacks are appropriate for downtown but not for residential neighborhoods. Any expansion of Country Club Drive will be forced onto the homeowners on the opposite side of the street. We can do better than this.
