He is owed a debt of gratitude if nothing else.

Bruce Bairnsfather was the only artists to appeal to both the men at the front and the civilians at home and as such is more representative of what soldiers really thought about the war than the most famous of the war poets. His work should be remembered and used to help in our understanding of this much-misunderstood conflict.

To make people laugh, especially in challenging circumstances, is a great skill and very rare!

Bruce Bairnsfather's cartoon s help to convey the evryman humour of the trenches & continues to be an inspiration. He deserves to be recognised fro both his art & his impact on the morale of the country during The Great War. A noble cause indeed.

Dear S J Lang Thankyou so much for telling us about your wonderful memories. There can be no better evidence of the power of Bairnsfather's humour. More stories please! Tonie and Valmai

'"And to think the same dear moon is shining down on him..." "That b.... moon will be the death of me!"' I was introduced to Bairnsfather at an early age when one of my grandmothers used to describe the cartoons to me. Lo and behold, when my other grandmother died, among her possessions were two books of Bairnsfather cartoons! Bliss. It is certainly time he received recognition for his morale-boosting powers.

General Patton wasn't exactly a fan because of the way that BB made fun of the Establishment just as Bill Mauldin did. He told Mauldin that he didn't like his work and that he didn't like Bairnsfather either. So thanks!

Thankyou General. Yes we must not forget his work in WW2 particularly for the Mighty Eighth who we now understand are trying to collect their old nose art of which BB did a lot including the splendid Old Bill which one of the crew or his family still have.
