I'd love to see the full unabridged version. Was that what James Ellroy saw when he commended it in the afterword for the re-print of the book?

It's quite obvious watching the theatrical cut that this film was butchered to make it more suitable for cinema-going audiences. But so much has clearly been lost as to make the film largely dismissed - which is a great shame as it had much going for it! Why not release the 3hr directors cut on Bluray with Ellroys stamp of approval and make more money off it!

The 3 hour directors cut needs to be released on blu ray as there are subplots in the theatrical version that need clarity and help improve an awkward ending.

De Palma is an artist and the film deserves a second chance. You can't butcher James Ellroy either. I understand theatrical limitations, but there is no reason why a release of De Palma's director's cut on DVD and Blu Ray shouldn't be released. Do the right thing...

Brian DePalma is a good director and most especially with thrillers. I am a fan of the version released and would be very interested to see the 3-hour version that I have been led to believe exists.
I am a film fan and appreciate directors who take their time to tell a story especially if it is a long movie. I understand that studios believe that audiences do not like long movies and that exhibitors feel that they lose money by not being able to have as many screenings per day as they would with a 90-minute to 2 hour film.
This is not the issue with a 3-hour version being released on DVD/BluRay. People who are fans or the people who did not understand the film complete;but thought it was still well made would be very interested in purchasing a 3-hour director's cut.
James Ellroy, the author of the book upon which this film is based saw the 3-hour version and was inspired to write and essay about the version of the movie that he saw. Later, after seeing the cut that was released to movie theatres, he refused to comment. This could be construed as disappointment, possibly anger.
I would pay again to own this new version. For marketing purposes, the studio could release a DVD/BluRay with both versions of the film. In addition, with the release of the "new" disc(s), supporting commentary could be extensive since there would so much new footage.
Please release the version that James Ellroy saw. I respect him as an author, enjoyed the essay he wrote and would love to see him in interviews included as extras with the new DVD/BluRay.

The Black Dahlia is a fairly difficult book. James Ellroy was really starting to stretch out here. I haven't seen any version of the film yet, but I can't imagine anything less than 3 hours could even get close to the book.
