Calling ALL artists, arts leaders, arts orgs, arts lovers in the Eugene area. Who is not dreaming-wishing-hoping that the Oregon Foundation and EWEB will donate, or help find donors, to give Eugene a world class visual arts center at last. Could it include other arts? Yes it could.

Picture this (as if you haven't already!) -- this aesthetically fabulous, historical treasure of a building housing multiple, local regional, national-to-international art galleries/arts orgs. -- all run via a collaboration of the many great artists and arts orgs. in our city. Including classroom spaces, residency spaces, offices, even a theater and a gift shop. Surrounded by restaurants, pubs, wineries, shopping, gathering spots. The possibilities are endless and the dream has lived in so many of us for decades. The time has come.

We all know that culture and business grow up around the arts. A world-class visual arts center (many of us are calling our dream The Art Plant) would put Eugene on the map bigger and brighter than ever.

This a community plea. We have a highly collaborative arts network. Lets live up to our city motto Eugene. You know what that is.

I was walking past the steam plant earlier today and just kept picturing those light-filled galleries in my head while trying to ignore the chain link fencing everywhere. It is funny because so many of you have been messaging me about how you remember the building from years ago and honestly the enthusiasm makes it so much easier to keep bugging the people at the water board who probably think I am just some overly excited art nerd.

I have a great fear that this incredible location will be wasted on something mundane and generic when it could be something visionary that defines Eugene for the future. Where better to look than the river and the arts?

As a downtown Eugene business owner, I wholeheartedly support this idea. We have enough empty storefronts, restaurant space, offices using prime retail spaces, and office space for lease. We don't need more or that, what we need is more to attract visitors.

This project will create art, create discussion and debate, create jobs and create a vibrant local cultural oasis.

Yes, a beautiful Art Center that includes all of the creative arts would support the uniquely creative spirit of Eugene.

Eugene is the perfect cradle for creativity from formal to contemporary and every type of artistic wonder. This would make our city ther true art Mecca it was meant to be.
