In truth I never expected to be alive during the time of such an epoch in the Catholic Church. Praise God in his infinite wisdom for the gift of Pope Francis. Let these conservatives/reactionaries stew in the hell of their own making.

I was raised Catholic, left the church about eight years ago, and am now Jewish. Last year, a new pope was elected on my birthday. Best birthday present I have ever received. Pope Francis has given me the gift of being able to regard the Church with affection rather than with anger and bitterness. He has allowed me to make peace with a portion of myself that needed peace. I don't believe that Jesus was divine, but I do believe that he had important things to say, and Pope Francis is the only pope in my lifetime who truly follows his teachings.

In January 2013, I was ready to leave the Church - I thought it was going to be impossible for me to stay, with how I was struggling with the obsession of Liberace style over Catholic substance promulgated by the Neotrads. Then, 13 March happened. I was busy, so couldn't see the end of the election live, but when I heard we had a Jesuit pope from Argentina, I cried. Then I found out more about Papa Francis and I cried a lot more - I knew I could STAY. A man of immense compassion and a backbone of steel - we don't always agree, but that's as it should be. What I DO know is that our values: living as Christ would have us live, loving G-d and our neighbour, pastoral care above all else - are deeply aligned. Thank you, Papa.

God briefly visited the 11th Century, decided it was a waste of time and moved on. Cappa Ray, however, liked it so much he made it his home.
