RE: Women's State Road Race posted by Andy Hollinger on 8/29/2016 11:30:00 PM.We tried morning times for women ... but they didn't come. In 2010 the start time was 8:45 and we had 9 pre-reg ... but maybe it's time to try again ... I've written to Bonnie to see if she'll let me change it ... and we'll put the Cat 4 men at 1:P and Men 5 at 1:15 ... what the heck, if the USAC will let us, we'll do it.

Dear Andy Hollinger, et al.,
We know this feedback has been given many times before, as many women will no longer participate in this race. Last year the women's Cat1/2 and Cat3 podiums (races that were 66 miles scheduled around 1 p.m.) could barely stand up for a photo due to heat exhaustion, so we may be asking for something obvious.
Can you please schedule the start times for the State Championship road races based on skill and distance instead of our genders?
As an example, the Men's Cat 5 race is scheduled at 9 a.m. and is only 33 miles, whereas the Women's P12 field is scheduled to race 66 miles at 1 p.m.
Also, shortening races in response to this complaint is not what these athletes are looking for; please keep the races over the minimum qualifying distance for upgrade points according to the USAC rule book (over 40 miles for women's Cat 3).
Thank you for putting on this race, and thank you for listening to ways to make it better. We know you can't control the weather, but you can control who gets access to the premium start times.
Sincerely,
Texas Women Racers and Supporters

I just looked at the counter and we hit 250 signatures which is honestly wild because I really thought this would just be me shouting into the void about heat exhaustion and bad scheduling. Andy actually responded on the forum about potentially changing the start times and I am still trying to process if that is a victory or just a start but wow it feels like someone is finally listening.

I never actually expected this to get so much traction but my coffee is cold because I have been refreshing the feed for an hour. It feels like people are finally listening to what we have been saying about the heat and the scheduling for years now. I am just sitting here staring at the screen and trying to process the shift in energy.

We are getting annoyingly close to that 250 marker and I honestly think we could hit it by tonight if everyone just sent a quick link to a friend who actually races. It feels like we have some momentum finally because Andy is at least talking about it now so let's keep the heat on until they actually commit to the schedule change.

These requests seem fair and reasonable to me, as a barely Cat 5 male. It's only logical that longer races start earlier. With all due respect, higher Cat women definitely outrank lower cat males!
No one should have to start a 66 mile race at 1pm in September in Texas. It might be harder to organize, but it would make for a better experience for those involved, and that's what this is about.
The Texas women's racing scene is one of the best in the country. We deserve to be treated with respect. Please consider moving up the start time for the Women's 1/2 race, a change based off of distance rather than gender. Secondly, as a Cat 3 racer, I would greatly appreciate the courtesy of a race at least 40 miles.
Thank you Andy for promoting & officiating races in Texas. As someone who has suffer a heat stroke at a Texas road road, please consider changing the start time. Thank you!
I've always complained about women that complain about pro purses being so small. The reason being that at the local level they are not active enough. Support the ladies at the local level and adjust their schedule, and they'll love you for it. Us guys are going to show up no matter what. You know that.
I never understood why the longer races were held in the hottest times of the day. Sounds like a reasonable request.
Seems like a reasonable request to me.

I only raced this one year because of the bad start time. Time to change or at least alternate from year to year.
