I'm appalled by the Promotions Committee's decision to go against a department's recommendation, depriving us of a wonderful teacher and a brilliant scholar.

I am an alumn and parent - former Russian student and parent of a Russian student. Let’s keep this professor.

Initially I was dreading the course I chose to take with professor Walker, but just after the first few minutes of class, I knew it would be a favorite. And it is.

Professor Walker is one of the best professors I have encountered at Middlebury. He is essential to Middlebury's continuing success and status in academia, specifically in Russian and Eurasian studies. Denying him tenure is not only a terrible precedent to set for future professors seeking tenure or employment at Middlebury, but also calls into question the capabilities of the college's administration in prioritizing academic excellence over likely snap judgment financial decisions forced by a near decade of mismanagement.

I have had Professor Walker in multiple courses across multiple languages, from a lecture class on Russian culture and history to a small independent study of intrepid students studying Ukrainian. Professor Walker not only excels at the actual art of teaching, but creates an environment where we connect the classroom to the real world. He acknowledged and incorporated the very real world context when I learned Russian and Ukrainian with him. In the Russian Mind, we would daily attempt to understand the political situation in Russia along side the complex historical and societal past of Russia. I have always felt like Professor Walker was someone who's teaching was based in the real world, and not as some detached scholar. He has been a pivotal part of my Liberal Arts education at Middlebury. It is disappointing and frankly antithetical to our mission to deprive professors like him the position to keep teaching, informing, and enriching students. Матвей Филиппович, мы любим вас!

The fact that Professor Walker is the only professor that teaches Ukrainian at Middlebury is essential and valuable for the academic/language learning community at the college.

Professor Walker is an indispensable part of now only the Russian Department but Middlebury as whole, sharing his expertise on so many topics in many different department. He is really what Middlebury is about: engaging with the liberal arts via indepth and meaningful conversations and discussions. Protecting Professor Mathew Walker’s position here means protecting the very mission statement that Middlebury stands on: a space which fosters transformative insight that prepares students to a lead engaged and consequential lives.

Professor Walker cares about his students. It was a joy be in his classes, and it is a shame that future students will not have the same opportunity.

If any professor is deserving of receiving tenure it is Matt Walker

Professor Walker taught one of the most creative and transformative classes I've taken at Middlebury. He was deeply engaged in the material and sparked our interests in relatively niche literature. He is kind, generous, intellectually rigorous and personable. Hearing that Middlebury declined to give him tenure is appalling.

while I never took a class with professor walker, I know the impact he had on my friends studying the Russian language while at Midd, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of tenure.

He is truly the best professor. The kindest and the sweetest. And very very very supportive.

Professor Walker lies at the heart of the Middlebury Russian department. His support for students were a bright spot during the dark Covid years. Without Professor Walker, the Russian department loses much of its identity and appeal.

Midd 22.5 and a student of Russian at Midd. Matt is the kind of example I use to tell my professor-aspiring partner about what I loved deeply about Middlebury. The Russian dept needs to keep people like him.

Midd 23.5. I took his Nabokov class in spring 2023. I loved the way he teaches and how passionately he conveys the meaning of art to students.

Professor Walker was an integral part of my Middlebury education, there is no one more deserving of the position. He consistently teaches with quality and is the reason I chose to major in Russian after my first semester.
