The long term retention of the Squash Facilities at the Herons Leisure Centre in Haslemere, as outlined and endorsed at the recent full Waverley Borough Council Meeting, is to be applauded. The local availability of such facilities can make a real difference to the local residents ongoing participation in Sports.

However, it has come to light that the 'phased' renovation, as currently planned, will require the closure of the Squash courts for the entire nine month renovation in order that the Gym may be relocated to the Squash Courts.

Not only would this mean Haslemere Squash players will be denied the opportunity to play Squash locally for nine months (no doubt leading to some 'giving up' Squash - a long term reduction in participation in this wonderful sport in the Haslemere area) but also there is a risk that the Squash Court's Hardwood flooring would damaged by heavy Gym equipment to the point where it's beyond economic repair possibly leading to the premature closure of these much utilised courts.

We, the undersigned, petition Waverley Borough council and their Leisure provider partners DC Leisure and contractor Cosmur to re-examine the options for Gym relocation and revision of the phasing schedule such that access to the Squash facilities would be maintained for the maximum duration possible, and not mealy closed to make way for a relocated Gym. As squash players most effected by the current proposals we would be delighted to be given the chance to be involved in this process.

In consideration thereof please remember that the controversial site chosen for the new leisure centre in Godalming was chosen on the basis that the ongoing access to Swimming classes would only be maintained by the development taking place on a new, green field, site.
