Jann Arden posted today: Why did the LIFESAVER people stop making their epic Christmas LIFESAVER BOOKS? A big thick cardboard wonder that flipped open up to display ten fantastic, exploding flavours we couldn’t wait to tuck into our heads. I would trade away my Rumandbutter for my brother Patrick’s wintOgreen. Was I the only one who loved the wintOgreen? Butterscotch was mom’s favourite and how she managed to just have ONE is beyond me. All I know is that the whole book, all ten rolls, were gone by the time we fell exhausted into our beds when Christmas Day came to a close. Maybe I’m writing about Christmas 3 weeks too early, but I can’t help it. My parents have been gone four years,(mom) and seven years,(dad) respectively. I can’t decide in my mind if it feels like they were never here at all, or that they could walk through the door right this very second like they never left. Christmas was all about my parents. They were what made the day special. I knew Santa wasn’t the one up at 3 O’clock in the morning wrapping last minute things and stuffing the stockings full of little things from Avon and Sears. I can’t ever remember NOT getting a LIFESAVERS BOOK which is why I’ve been thinking about it so much. I went online to look for some to get for friends this year, but they basically suck Christmas balls. NO good flavours…NO ‘opening book’…they were all the same flavour..the five fruit flavour thing…ugh…I don’t get why they’ve given up on doing it right? I’m not sure I’ll ever feel excited about Christmas again, certainly not the way I did when I was eleven years old. The memories of coming down the stairs and seeing all the gifts under the tree are so visceral. The smell of all the holiday food being prepared…sage and cinnamon and the smoke coming from the fireplace. (My dad lit that thing ONCE a year, and Christmas morning was it) I don’t mind being single 364 days a year, but Christmas Day is tough. I’m very lucky though, for the last 20ty plus years, I’ve bee
