An Autism Center school in Duval county would cause unnecessary segregation of students with Autism and make it more difficult for the prospective students to interact with their non-disabled peers. Teaching students with Autism grouped by their disability is an administrative conveinence. Children with Autism excel with structure, routine, and language rich environments with many opportunities for socialization. By sign ing this petition you are asking the DCPS board members to cancel their proposed plan to open an Autism center in the Duval county Public school system. The school board vote is occuring on February 2, 2016.

The Board is focusing on the wrong thing, separating the Autism children is taking away their ability to be able to function in everyday life and coming across different personalities. Children that don't have disabilities need to learn how to interact with disable children as well.
our church includes kids with autism in the same class with other students and assigns a special assistant to help with the special needs. It would be less costly to provide the support in a normal structured environment and allow these children to learn to interact with everyday situations. segregating a school wont help, work places wont be segregated later in life.
I have worked with children and adults with disabilities all my life and I am convinced that education that is all inclusive is the most successful environment to learn. To segregate their environment is detrimental to their cognitive and social development.
Students with disabilities should not be separated from non-disabled peers. We do not take a child out of the general education class if they have to use a wheelchair. A disability is only part of who a person is. With appropriate support and leadership, inclusion can work for everyone.
Children with Autism should NOT be segregated into a center exclusively. My son has taken great strides in being able to participate with general education students. He is at Westview School and is in 8th grade. It would be a shame to segregate them in a center.
Segregation sucks
I have 3 autistic family members, One in a high school, who has developed great social skills, understanding and learning, a Second who is not fully Autistic but has Aspergers, with a great talent of social skills , music and a desire to learn, and a Third who is fully to the most extreme Autistic, hes a wild child, and needs specific care But he tries, We've gotten him to talk, look you in the eyes, understand his place, much of this has been through his immediate family, positive reenforcement as well as his Aspergers sibling that knows him and understands him more than all of us, she is the link that has helped our and his entire life, Through her understanding and communication to us, we been able to understand. I understand this is a public school topic but all children should have the chance to enjoy if they choose to have every option available and the teachers should be ready for these circumstances. we as students look up to you, your our peers. We might not show it, but we look up to you.

As a grandparent of a child on the autism spectrum, I do not support segregating autistic children in our public schools.
