As educators during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recession, we insist that public services not be sacrificed as a "solution" to economic woes. Fair and safe learning and working conditions will be required. We are in the midst of a true economic crisis, and cannot turn our backs on our future, especially when we have the resources available. A suitable portion of the massive +$20 billion available in the state permanent funds should be used to meet the following, ensuring quality education in the state of New Mexico:

  • Schools will be declared safe for employees and students to return by scientifically-based standards
  • Education budgets will not be cut
  • All school employees will keep their jobs, with no reduction in pay
  • All school employees will have access to 2 weeks paid sick leave at the beginning of the school year
  • Insurance premiums will not increase

Since Gov. Michelle Lujan seems it necessary to close down restaurants, etc., it only makes sense that she follows the same guidelines for schools and doesn’t put further economic hardships on the teachers and faculty.

Educators know alot more than the subjects they teach. They need to be ingrained in the decision making process for any school reopening plans. Our students, teachers and staff need to be safe AND we need to simultaneously realize the extreme limitations and inequities of online learning. Now would be a good time to REALLY decrease class sizes so our students could actually learn. It was a broken system even before COVID. An uneducated generation is not an option.

I think these demands are quite moderate. Sick leave should not have to be used for quarantine, and insurance should cover required testing.

I used to teach in Zuni and I’m very concerned. We teachers are planning nationwide call to actions. Thank you for doing this.

We cannot return to school safely without the needed funding for crucial resources.

This is a good petition clearly expressing what needs to be done in this crisis. Further, ALL resources of money, time, and technology going to standardized testing, teacher evaluation, and school grading/evaluation should be SUSPENDED until our schools get the support needed to navigate this crisis, have rich learning opportunities for all students, staff and families, and ensure that our schools will be safe and nurturing.
