To: Ministry of Education, Bahamas
We, the undersigned educators, are calling on the Ministry of Education to take urgent action: Increase teacher salaries now.
Teachers are the backbone of our education system — yet we are expected to build the future on a salary that cannot even sustain the present.
- Housing Crisis for Teachers: We cannot afford safe or decent housing on our current pay. For many of us, rent takes up half or more of our monthly salary.
- No Hope for Homeownership: With wages this low, getting approved for a mortgage is nearly impossible. We are stuck in a cycle of renting, barely making ends meet.
- Cost of Living Is Rising — Our Pay Is Not: Groceries, gas, electricity, and other basic needs continue to increase in cost, while our salaries remain stagnant.
- Burnout Is Real: We work long hours, buy supplies with our own money, and still get underpaid and undervalued.
- Teacher Retention Is in Crisis: Talented, passionate educators are leaving the profession — not because they don’t love teaching, but because they can’t survive on what they earn.
We Demand:
- A significant, immediate increase in teacher salaries
- Regular, transparent adjustments for inflation and cost of living
- Respect for our profession through fair compensation
The future of education depends on teachers being able to live with dignity. We are not asking for luxuries — we are asking to survive.
Enough is enough. Pay us what we’re worth.
