Tazewell Students for the Facility Sales Tax

On April 2nd, 2019 Tazewell voters have the opportunity to do a service to students all across the county by passing the facility sales tax. The facilities sales tax would provide necessary funding for school districts to make a variety of improvements that would affect the everyday lives of students by charging an additional one cent per dollar on purchased made in Tazewell County. Leaky roofs, cold rooms, and otherwise damaged or outdated facilities are real problems that thousands of students face in their schools. There are also less obvious issues that schools have pledged to address with this revenue such as energy efficiency, paying off debt, and fire prevention system upgrades. Perhaps most importantly from a student’s perspective, the facility sales tax would allow districts to invest in the security of our schools. With the increasing pervasiveness of violent attacks on schools, this issue weighs heavily on the minds of students all across the nation. Security cameras, fencing, gates, and emergency alarms are all mechanisms that could be funded by a facility sales tax. For these reasons, we as students of Tazewell County support the passage of the facility sales tax on April 2nd.
