Please turn off TAXITV - New York
Dear NYC Taxi and
Limousine Commission,
We, the undersigned, despise the obnoxious “TaxiTV” you have forced upon
cabbies and passengers.
Yes, it is nice to be able to pay our cab fare with a credit
card... but no, we don’t want to have to hurt our finger hitting “off”
seven or eight times each time we step into a cab. Even then, the TV screen is still “active” and an annoyance, particularly at night.
Nearly a third of 22,000 told you in a recent survey that TaxiTV was their “biggest annoyance” about riding NYC cabs. Yet your chairman, David S. Yassky, told Feb. 11, 2011, New York Times that he thinks it’s a simply question of creating “better content” for passengers.
No. We simply don’t want to be barraged with content every time we step into a cab! Americans watch more than enough TV ... whizzing through the greatest city on earth, we’d rather look out the window than stare into a television screen.
In lieu of abolishing TaxiTV, we would ask
- for a physical “off” switch to make turning off the television easier;
- for the TV to be completely “off” and the screen “not active” when the switch is off;
- and for the volume to be muted when a passenger first gets inside a cab, and only turned on if he or she chooses to turn it on.
Thank you for your consideration.
