I went to Big Temple last week. As there was a long queue for darshan, my eyes rolled on all the sides. I could see nailing on the walls, pipes inserted, and damages by human intervention to the heritage structure. With ardent devotion, under the leadership of King Rajaraja Cholan, million hands have worked day and night to create a mammoth structure for Lord Shiva. Few hundred reckless hands today have spoiled the austere and authenticity of this place of worship. And I am sure those urchins who have inscribed graffiti on the walls and pillars do not have a penny even to erect a brick structure. Hundreds of young police constables (men and women in uniform) stand under the scorching sunlight on the arterial roads of Chennai but unfortunately we do not have enough policing done on this great structure. A handful of lady constables are stationed which is not enough to guard the temple from the hands of vandalism.
