As a member of the international academic community, I emphatically protest the actions of the Hungarian government to repress academic freedom in Hungary by controlling budgets and applying other means of limiting freedom of thought.

The budgetary autonomy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has to be absolutely conserved, otherwise it is not possible to keep the quality and high standards of its research institutes, that significantly contribute to the recognition of Hungarian Science and the future of Hungary. Only scientists have the knowledge and competence to make decisions on the research going on in their institutes. And politicians should rather support science by providing more money to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences than to introduce political decisions aimed to control or influence science. Good science requires freedom, allowing scientist to make their own decisions exclusively based on innovation and scientific quality, and these decisions only can be judged by other independent scientists, but not by politicians.
