The Occupy Movement has become an insufferable burden on both the students and faculty of the University of California Davis. The movement’s disorderly conduct, disregard of student welfare, and blatant noncompliance with campus regulations have made it a public nuisance. For the following reasons, we the undersigned request that any and all reasonable means be used by the UC Davis administration to evict all Occupy protestors from the UC Davis campus.
-The Occupy protestors have blocked student access to essential services including but not limited to the financial aid offices in Dutton Hall.
-The Occupy protestors have blocked student access to the US Bank office in the Memorial Union.
-The Occupy protestors have harassed students attempting to access the aforementioned services.
-The actions of the Occupy protestors have robbed students of their educations by resulting in cancelled classes and discussions.
-The Occupy protestors have littered the UC Davis campus with posters, signs, stickers, fliers, and other propaganda.
-The Occupy protestors have degraded the physical appearance of the UC Davis campus with their slovenly encampment in the quad.
-The aforementioned encampment poses a health and sanitation hazard to both the Occupiers themselves as well as the general student population.
-The aforementioned encampment is in violation of campus regulations and is, therefore, not protected as a peaceful demonstration.
-The actions of the Occupy Movement on campus have damaged the international opinion of the UC Davis student body.
This should not be mistaken as a comprehensive list of grievances. The hazards and inconveniences caused by the Occupiers are too numerous to list in full. While the Occupy Movement initially gained some degree of support by appealing to the student population’s desire for lower tuition, their message has quickly evolved since the movement’s inception. The new, more radical views of the movement are not shared by the vast majority of UC Davis students (as the support this petition receives will prove clearly). The Occupy UCD movement has ironically become the 1% oppressing the 99%.
We, the undersigned, hereby formally request that the UC Davis administration use all appropriate means necessary to remove the Occupy demonstrators and restore order to our campus.
The campus remains obstructed and the situation is becoming intolerable. I am currently reaching out to the administration to demand immediate action for our student body.
March 6, 2012
The momentum is undeniable now. Campus leadership can no longer pretend this is just a fringe concern.
