Background: For approximately two years the Take Back the Boulevard has worked with the community of Eagle Rock to determine what changes stakeholders would like to see on Colorado Boulevard. The strongest community message was that safety must be improved on Colorado Boulevard. Important considerations: • Currently the percentage of pedestrian and bike related injuries are almost twice the national average. • The incident of vehicular accidents has shown a steady trend year after year, primarily due to excessive speed. • Only in Eagle Rock is Colorado Boulevard configured as six lane boulevard. Both to the West (Glendale) and to the East (Pasadena) the boulevard is configured with four travel lanes (two in each direction). • Traffic is not expected to be unacceptably impacted since traffic volume on Colorado Boulevard is significantly below the capacity of the current six lanes. Replacing a traffic lane with a bike lane will provide the following benefits: • Traffic will be slowed improving the safety for drivers. • Parking will be easier because of the buffer between traffic and curb parking provided by the bike lane. • Exiting an automobile on the street (driver side) will be safer. • Bikers will enjoy the greater safety of a dedicated lane. • Pedestrians will find it easier to cross Colorado Boulevard (fewer traffic lanes). • The Boulevard will function more like Eagle Rock’s Main Street reinforcing the small town character of the community. • The public space known as Colorado Boulevard will be more equitably shared with drivers, pedestrians and bikers. : More About Take Back the Boulevard: MISSION The mission of the Take Back the Boulevard initiative is to serve as a catalyst for the community-driven revitalization of Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock.
