On average, more than three women are
murdered by their husbands or partners in this country every day.
Currently, there is not a minimum bail amount put into place for Domestic Violence offenders. In September of 2011, a 51 year-old Connecticut woman had filed for divorce on August 17, having her husband served with papers while he was in custody on a domestic violence charge. On September 23, 10 days after he finally was able to post bail--
which a judge reduced from $50,000 to $1,000--and get out of jail, this man fatally stabbed and choked his wife of 20 years, then committed suicide in their home.
This is a perfect example of why we are proposing that Connecticut enact a law that states that any person who is charged with acts of Domestic Violence should be penalized with a bail amount no less than $20,000 in order to deter these occurrences.

The judge who lowered that bail should be held accountable. A thousand dollars is nothing for a life. This is absolutely tragic and preventable.
