I used to work retail for the Nerd Squad which is a Big Blue Box brand a few years back. I certainly enjoyed the exhilaration of prepping and working Black Friday and that Black Friday weekend. Our managers ordered in lunch, we worked in shifts and for the most part we performed like clockwork. It is expected in retail and you did it no questions asked. We used to call it Green Friday at the Big Blue Box as it kicked off our earning season which is very short in retail. One day is not going to make or break the sales goal. Although I have left the retail sector, I watched the trend gain momentum these past 3 years as many of us did of large retailers extending their Black Friday hours to our sacred Thanksgiving day. Thanksgiving is an American Holiday with no religious significance. A National Holiday where the Banks, Stock Markets and the Federal and Local Governments take a break. It's a day of family, friends and neighbors coming together to enjoy ones company (for the most part) and renewing interests together. Why should anyone in retail have to punch a clock on Thanksgiving? Community and Corporate responsibility should be guiding these large retailers, not Corporate earnings. I don't shop on Thanksgiving and I don't think most of you do either. Your family, friends and neighbors should not have to work on Thanksgiving.
