A behind-the-scenes effort to fire Executive Director Lester comes at a time when Californian’s celebrate the 40th anniversary of the California Coastal Act and at a time of strong accomplishments, including new authority from the state legislature to fine landowners who block coastal access.

The attempt to fire Executive Director Lester is an effort by pro-development interests to undermine the effectiveness of the California Coastal Act and the independence of the Commission staff. Executive Director Lester refused an effort to force him to resign quietly and has called for a full public hearing on his proposed termination.

The Commission’s Executive Director serves at the will of the twelve member Coastal Commission. The four Commissioners appointed by the Governor Jerry Brown may be under great pressure to fire Dr. Lester, including the North Coast Commissioner, Martha McClure of Crescent City. In 2015, Commissioner McClure had the worst voting record with only 32% of votes cast to protect coastal resources.

Tell her to represent the North Coast, not Governor Brown. Tell her that you oppose turning the Commission over to energy and development interests and to cast her vote to retain Executive Director Lester.
