Syrian Refugees in need

The Syrian Refugee Crisis is happening because the war in Syria and neighboring countries is creating a dangerous environment for civilians who want nothing with the war.

Currently there are thought to be 11 million people that have fled their country, half of which are children.

And what are we doing about it, here in Australia we are contributing in a small way by letting in 6,500 refugees from 2013-14 and since then the number has grown to around 11,000 each year. This may seem like a lot but compared to the 11 Million this is no were near enough. Compared to Germany and other countries that are a fraction of the size of Australia, who let in 1 million people each year.

The excuse that the government use is that it would collapse the economy because these people would be supported by the government and they wouldn’t be able to pay tax until they get their bearings, it’s estimated that the 11,000 let in costs the government $1,100,000 each year which is roughly $100 for each person for a year (PoA, 2015). The average amount made by Australians each year is $72,800 after tax compare this to the $100 dollars required for each person and the vast size of Australia and there is a potential for many more refugees being let into the country.

Australia has agreed to increase by 12,000 which is a massive improvement but still far from the mark that would ensure that all or most of the people fleeing Syria can resettle.

The War in Syria is increasingly getting worse and more dangerous for people living there, the Refugee VISA Permits are the highest they have ever been since WWII when Australia let in 85000 refugees. Australia introduced an post-war immigration portfolio in 1945 is let people effected in the war (destruction of home or threats left by the war)

This grew to become the immigration system and since then 800,000 people have been resettled in Australia (ABC, 2015). At the moment 3,500 people are misplaced each day, 1 out of 4 are Syrian. With the current system if all those people can to Australia all the VISA Permits would be taken within a week to 8 days. Not all of these people are coming to Australia but this puts it into perspective how big the problem is and how much Australia’s efforts to help are insignificant.

By signing this petition you agree that our government should allow more refugees into Australia
