As an Alumni of Class of 1980, I truly DO NOT agree with building a homeless shelter between two public schools. This truly spells TROUBLE.

Would you place it by your child's school?

The children at our school do not need anything else standing in their way of a safe and successful future. This low barrier shelter would invite poor influences and distractions into their immediate environment as well as the possibility of dangerous persons in very close proximity to our school - especially for the students who walk to and from school on a daily basis.

I agree that a low barrier shelter is needed in this city. But I do not agree that it should be located near two public schools. Let's do the right thing for all of our citizens.

Addressing the needs such as addiction and mental illness is vital to the health of the community. However, this type of facility should not be near a school and children should not be exposed to these conditions.

Please reconsider this plan although it already seems as though it is a done deal. Ask yourself "Would I want my child to be exposed to this on their walk home?" "Would I feel at ease if this were less than a mile away my child's school?" In closing please stop hiding things like this from the general public because you do not want to face us! This is ridiculous that anyone thought it was a great idea to begin with. Our children deserve the same concerns as a child in other parts of the city. No one would even mention placing this facility near a school in Lakeview so do not do it to our children.

As a Board member of Sylvanie Williams school, part of the NOCP group of schools, I encourage moving this shelter away from public schools.

The petition says it all. The proposed location is a reckless waste of taxpayer money, probably benefits cronies in the construction industry, isolates homeless people from their source of sustenance, and will be a poor role model for school children and teens and may endanger their lives. Seriously, you want to rethink this decision!

We should work to deconcentrate poverty and provide supportive housing for the chronically homeless, veterans, those formerly incarcerated, disabled, and suffer with mental health issues in a safe environment for those served and the surrounding community. A better location is the former John Dibert Tuberculosis Hospital at 340 South Claiborne which can be easily rehabbed.

Please add your name to this petition asking the Mayor to suspend his plan to locate a "low barrier" homeless shelter next door to 2 schools. Addressing the needs of the chronically homeless is the right problem to address - but this plan is the wrong solution. The safety of our children must be our top priority!
