The hatred black people have of themselves is a crying shame. From adult women trying to discourage young women wearing their natural locks to skin bleaching. We must start to love who we are.

I faced similar comments from members of family when I decided to go from relaxed to natural. It was never my decision to relax my hair, so I simply took back my power after realising that there was no real reason for me doing so.

I'm proud to see many in agreement to support these young women and everyone with natural hair. I go back and forth from natural to relaxed- my choice! If these young ladies have that decision taken away from them then it may only be the beginning of history repeating itself. With the school in question being my alma mater it is a shame and disheartening that the principle a female would be the enforcer of such extremist rules. The focus of school should place more emphasis on what and how information is being transferred instead of what kids are wearing. That's the point of wearing a uniform. Hair style choice is an expression of self as long as it is neat and clean there should be no discussion on the topic. This principle has failed her students by providing a distraction from education.

Im 6 years natural. The journey to the real me is very liberating, this is the hair that we were born with, that grows from our scalp naturally. It is sad that students have to fight to go on this journey, with no support from those who should be educating them about why this is liberating.

Natural is beautiful. Black is beautiful. Self-expression is beautiful.
Girls have the right to access education and women have the right to work, regardless of the texture and/or style of their hair.
European standards of beauty must not reign supreme in The Bahamas - a majority black country - nor should they dictate appropriateness or professionalism. This independent nation must shake off the shackles of slavery and colonialism, and free ourselves of the inferiority that has plagued us for centuries. We deserve to be ourselves, govern ourselves, and love ourselves.

I don't see the problem with these young ladies wanting to wear their natural hair. And why its an issue the school has a problem with it, that's not weave its their own natural roots.

Sign the petition. Encourage our beautiful little Black girls to love and accept themselves as young Queens that they are. They should not have to perm their hair to receive an education. Sign the petition. Act. Do. Be. BOOM!
