According to the BATF and a large amount of political opinion the second amendment is there to protect our right to own firearms for sporting purposes. The following is and excerpt from a recent BATF study about the importation of shotguns,

Consistent with previous ATF decisions and case law, the working group recognized that a sport or event must “have attained general recognition as being a ‘sport,’ before those uses and/or events can be ‘sporting purposes’ or ‘sports’ under Section 925(d)(3).”31 The statutory language limits ATF’s authority to recognize a particular shooting activity as a “sporting purpose,” and therefore requires a narrow interpretation of this term. As stated however, the working group recognized that sporting purposes may change over time, and that certain shooting activities may become “generally recognized” as such. According to this statement activities that are defined as a sporting purpose can be added. Plinking/target shooting and practical shooting competition should be defined as a sport . All types of firearms that are legal to own are involved in these sports. They may include high capacity detachable magazines, collapsible stocks, forward pistol grips, or light enhancing devices. These items are used because they improve competition time, ergonomics of the firearm, ease of acquiring targets, and result in the ability to shoot more accurately. Both of these sports help promote the rules of firearm safety and are a hands on way of putting them into practice. Supporting these activities as sports will make the firearms used in them have a sporting purpose. This will help protect our second amendment right and prevent bans being placed on our firearms because they will have sporting purposes.
