The Roswell Fire Department falls in the lowest 5% of fire department salaries in New Mexico. This is an embarrassment. Departments in smaller cities such as Hobbs, Carlsbad, Artesia, Espanola, Los Alamos, Alamogordo, etc. are paid higher starting salaries than RFD's 5 year salary. This is unacceptable. It is time for the citizens of Roswell and the members of the Roswell Fire Department to be united. It is time to give a message to the Roswell City Council, City Manager & Mayor Jurney that, as a city, we no longer accept this sub-par pay scale for the honorable men that protect and serve our town. "Friends of RFD" is a new community action group dedicated to seeing fair treatment for the Roswell Fire Department. We believe in equality between the Roswell Fire Dept. and Roswell Police Dept. We have been offended in the past that the city has seemingly placed more importance on police services than fire services. Roswell could not be a thriving community without either and we believe the Fire Dept. should be shown equal respect. "Friends of RFD" believe the city of Roswell should head the desires of their community, as elected officials, and show the Roswell Fire Dept the support they deserve by awarding them a minimum of a 5% salary increase. We also support the Roswell Fire Dept. in organizing and becoming a union if the city of Roswell continues to not show support for RFD's efforts to serve and protect this community. Roswell Fire Department runs over 7, 000 medical and fire-related calls a year. The likelihood is that you or someone you know has needed their services. We owe them a debt of gratitude.
