During these challenging economic times, we are again facing the risk of losing one of Hawai‘i’s major direct airlift routes. Japan Airlines (JAL) executives are considering canceling the direct flight from Narita to Kona, which will not only impact Hawai‘i Island’s economy, but also our overall community.
For more than 15 years, JAL has provided a daily, direct flight from Narita to Kona International Airport, which is the second international point of entry into the state of Hawai‘i. This route has served as a critical lifeline to Hawai‘i, which has helped to cultivate our strong ties with Japan and its people. Additionally, our partnership with JAL has produced countless jobs for our residents, provided benefits to our community, and has been a strong backbone to our visitor industry.

Since 1996, JAL has provided a daily, direct flight from Narita to Kona International Airport. This flight is important to Hawai‘i’s tourism economy, the economic well-being of Hawai‘i Island and our entire community. While we understand the difficult task of evaluating all of JAL’s routes, we humbly urge you to continue service from Narita to Kona.
Our hope is that the preservation of the Narita to Kona flight will help to benefit JAL and Hawai‘i well into the future while maintaining our cultural bond between Japan and Hawai‘i. JAL will always be considered a friend of Hawai‘i, and we thank you for your continued support and many years of service to our islands.

Seeing 250 names on this list feels heavy because I know how much my neighbors rely on these flights for their livelihoods. My heart is full knowing so many people understand why keeping this connection to Japan is vital for our island home.

This flight is huge for our local economy. Please keep it running for us.
Very bad idea for the Big Island.
Kona needs this flight. So many people rely on this for work and tourism. Keep it going!
Ridiculous to cut this route. It brings so much business to the island. Think of the workers.
my family lives in japan and this is the easiest way for them to visit. dont take this away!!!!

Been flying this route for years. Real bummer if they pull the plug now. hope they change their minds
