As a parent and member of the Wheeling Community, I support Wheeling Elementary School's Innovation Plan.
Wheeling Elementary has built a community where students learn in ways that are fun, exciting and interesting, where students create amazing projects and have opportunities to share those projects with other students and their community. Wheeling's IB Expo Nights and Exhibition Nights, along with in-class experiences and field trips, are examples of the opportunities that students have to share with the community.
Wheeling Elementary hires teachers and leaders who care about their students. They excite their students and care about the community they serve.

I am truly stunned by the way this has grown. It is clear that so many of you care deeply about the teachers and students at Wheeling. This momentum belongs entirely to this community.

Data clearly shows that the current models in our public school systems are failing our kids at alarming rates. Despite small improvements from individual schools to address these disparities, many schools and educators are prohibited in developing innovative models and programs within the confines of the district requirements. I support innovation designation because it shows that the school is trying to break the mold of where public schools are failing our students. It is a forward-thinking, proactive approach. Any school taking this kind of initiative, especially those supported and designed by Black educators, parents of Black children who are most affected by these disparities should be granted the opportunity to do so.
Our children need programs of this nature earlier than later in order remain competitive in today's world. And it's a great help for kids of color like mine. We need to look ahead to changing the norm in education to seek extraordinary outcomes for our children. This is necessary and essential.
Wheeling IB is an incredible asset to the Aurora community and it's IB status is a pivot cause. The curriculum and methodology of its IB program helped my kids have a global perspective while learning literacy, math, and science fundamentals. I believe this has added depth to their learning and helped them be critical thinkers on a universal level. It is important to maintain this method of teaching as our world becomes increasingly more socially global.
Wheeling is a great school, Mr Kregar has been great, he helped us through the process and testing of my son to be identified as a gifted student. Wheeling has a great community of parents and students, also they have personalized communication within the school!
The staff and the administrators of Wheeling are doing a great job, it is obvious that they truly care and want to be excellent educators. However, the unfortunate reality is that this school has a rough demographic. The school is doing their job by teaching the kids at school, but parents -we must do our job by teaching our kids good morals and ethical standards at home if we want to see change in our community - it starts here.
I love that my kids are excited to see there teachers. Cant wait to see how much progress is achieved this yr

As the PYP Representative for the Rocky Mountain Association of IB World Schools, I know that successful PYP schools are those who have the autonomy to collaborate on a regular basis, facilitate IB specific professional development opportunities for their staff, select resources and assessments in line with the IB philosophy, and train and then retain teachers. I would encourage the school board to grant this autonomy to Wheeling Elementary, because strengthening the PYP at this school will provide countless opportunities for their students!
