Stand in Support of Vision Zero

The need for an implementation of Vision Zero could not be greater.

I frequently see cars ignoring the stop signs in the Parkwood neighborhood, especially on Parkwood Drive. This is a particularly serious situation when children are walking to and from school.

The Montgomery County Civic Federation has been working on and endorsing many of the principles of Vision Zero for the last 18 months. The county needs to step up traffic enforcement in the neighborhoods that have become cut-through corridors for commuters. They violate the speed limit and they ignore stop signs. Tuckerman Lane crossings are very dangerous, too. I've seen people almost get killed as they try to cross the street in the pedestrian crosswalks. Drivers are just NOT paying attention and pedestrians don't look both ways before crossing!

I have commuted by bike on roads and trails for over 40 years. Traffic and traffic safety (car, bike pedestrian, scooter etc,) has become worse over the past 10 to 15 years. Something needs to be done.

The public and all government officials and compartmental departments need to get real serious about these safety issues. I don't drive and many times I am terrified to cross some of the dangerous intersections and roads.

Thanks, Evan for using Public transportation and seeing the inefficiencies and safety issues. I also want to have Councilmembers to attend a Bridges to Poverty workshop, a 2-day workshop to understand the obstacles of poverty.

I don't own a car and hate feeling like I'm in the way of cars when I'm just trying to walk in peace. We need V-0 now.

Pedestrian safety in Montgomery County needs to be improved.

I commute by car and see so many jaywalkers in the early morning and early evening hours on Viers Mill and Georgia. We need more crosswalks or pedestrian bridges, and better alerts at the crosswalks.

How about we also try fewer bikes on the road? Bikers seem to pick and choose whether they get treated like pedestrians, drivers, or whatever else as they see fit. (They run red lights and use cross walks all the time.) Biking around here on major roads is not safe and should stop. Plus, biking is a really bourgeois activity so I don’t know we should spend precious public dollars on making it easier.

I am a bike commuter so am very concerned that there is enough biking infrastructure and that it is open for cyclists (not blocked by construction and vehicles). Thank you for your concern.

My son-in-law rides a bike workdays (M-F all seasons!!) on roads & on the Crescent Trail to/from Chevy Chase to the District. I worry about his safety every time he rides his bike!

An old time expression was "the pedestrian has the right of way." Now pedestrians and bicyclists are not even an afterthought. Mission Zero should have a mission philosophy statement saying that the most vulnerable user of the road or sidewalk has the top priority so: Pedestrians are first priority, bicyclists are second priority, and only third priority are cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles. Scooters are a scourge and should simply be banned from being used or abandoned on public roads and sidewalks, as well as bike paths.

Thank you for your leadership. Please pursue these items: 1) Red light cameras at every signal. They work, don't they? So why aren't they standard? 2) Speed cameras everywhere they're legally permitted. 3) New kinds of speed cameras that measure speed over long stretches, rather than just a point measurement. 4) Distracted driving detection, like in CM Hucker's bill. 5) Change the relative price between driving and transit. Right now, for car owners, it almost always makes economic sense to drive, rather than take transit. Parking is sometimes free, but transit never is.

There are not enough sidewalks anywhere in Montgomery County from neighborhoods to parking lots. There are not enough crosswalks in the county. There should be a crosswalk at all major public bus stops, for instance on Sangamore Rd at Walhonding by the fire station. Instead of building more luxury condos in Bethesda, make our streets safer with sidewalks and crosswalks. Thank you.

Strongly support Vision Zero. Include measures to remind drivers to observe the 25 MPH speed limit in residential areas where people walk all the time. You may be in a hurry, but that doesn't justify threatening the lives of pedestrians .
