We the undersigned, are writing to you, Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, in solidarity and support of the Safe Schools Coalition. Young people experience violence and abuse at schools across Australia daily due to intolerant attitudes and beliefs towards sexuality and gender. This intolerance leads to exclusion, depression and significantly some of highest rates of youth suicide in the world. The programs offered by the Safe Schools Coalition are evidence-based and have been endorsed by schools throughout Australia and are demonstrated to reduce bullying, build resilience and increase harmony within school environments leading to increased participation amongst vulnerable youth. These positive outcomes then flow on to the wider community, reinforcing the Australian values of tolerance, equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination. The current threats to the operations of the Safe Schools Coalition are unacceptable and deeply concerning. We urge you to refer to the evidence and to stand strongly in support of the Safe Schools Coalition. A significant proportion of the Australian community find discrimination and intolerance based on sexuality and gender unacceptable. Any pandering to extremist recalcitrant groups whose message is hateful and out of step with the majority of the electorate or failure on your behalf to demonstrate leadership in this issue will most certainly result in a backlash against your government in the upcoming election.
