Indigenous peoples are not mascots. There are no positive connotations to the term Raider. Keep the Raven mascot that was chosen through an open process.

As a 1970 Rutland High School graduate, I was very pleased to see the mascot name changed- and very disturbed to see that's being reconsidered. For decades our predominately white community was oblivious to the fact that this mascot name is offensive to a portion of our citizens. The sentimental attachment that many still have doesn't outweigh the fact that this mascot represents a time in US history when indigenous people were forced off their land- with an estimated 90% of that population dying off due to disease, displacement, and war. The school district took an important step- there's a short term tempest. Please, please please stick to the name change and make clear that the ongoing harm of this discussion, much less the unthinkable turning back, must be stopped.
