This structure is totally incongruous with the other properties/homes and businesses in the neighborhood and the proposal for this site itself does not take other issues into consideration such as the open air drug market less than 3 blocks away that operates nearly 18 hours a day. Not a good mix for those already struggling with a myriad of problems, nor for their children.

Let's help homeless families by the city following its own rules so there is not neighborhood opposition. Without opposition, an appropriate shelter can be built and homeless families can get out of the current shelter at DC General.

The location for this shelter was thrust upon Ward 5 residents in an underhanded fashion, without opportunity for impacted residents to voice concerns. Moreover, residents were mislead into believing that no additional structure would be built -- instead, the former firehouse would be utilized for the entirety of the shelter. Ward 5 residents have been mislead at every step of this process, and deserve to be heard.

The proposed shelter violates the Law! We have zoning laws for a reason. To try to house 50 families there is ludicrous. This is NOT the right place for a shelter at all. There should not be a shelter at 1700 RI Ave.

The building would block the houses in the area plus the size looks as if they plan to house more than 50 people. Tell the mayor place her house in back of the structure see how she will feel.

No six story buildings currently exist on Rhode Island Avenue, NE from the Rhode Island metro to Eastern Avenue, NE and the fewer than a half-dozen four and five story buildings along that stretch are all brick.

We are not opposed to the shelter being built a couple of blocks away from our house, but we ARE opposed to how thoughtless the planning is. How ridiculous for families to not have much-needed outdoor space. And let's not pretend that politics aren't involved. I wonder how residents in upper northwest would feel if a similar structure was built their neighborhood.

Site is too small. It has constraint:s a historical 12th building and cell antenna. Suggested design is simply Too massive and horribly looking.

Building a shelter with this many design flaws (height, lack of outdoor space,. etc.) would be worse than doing nothing. Obey the zoning laws!

I only partially agree with this petition. I think the shelter should've have been built in the first location in Ward5 in a more industrial area rather than a more residential area at 17th & RIA.

Brookland/ Ward 5 has way more than its share of homeless and other non profit facilities. We really shouldn't have ANY more. If we are going to have more, they should we WITHIN current zoning regulations -- NO EXCEPTIONS.
