I would like to submit my support for the protection of Waikalua Loko Ia. I have been part of that effort since the creation of PAF in 1995 and have already seen the benefits in the number of students, volunteers, teachers and kupuna that benefit from working, teaching and learning about Hawaiian fishponds. There is a news article about the beginning and hope it can be viewed. http://archives.starbulletin.com/2002/05/19/editorial/special.html By the time I retired in 2015 over 3,500 teachers were trained and over 70,000 students were provided with the experience of working at a loko I'a. Herb Lee would receive the Cesar Chavez Champion of Change award. Sheila Cyboron of Castle High School would receive Windward District Teacher of the Year honors. Dr. Verlianne Malina-Wright would receive the Leo Reano Memorial award all indications of the success of that project done at Waikalua Loko.
No doubt we will need to continue this kind of effort and the reason for submitting this letter of support. The need to keep PAF and Waikalua Loko functional will no doubt continue.
