Wisconsin state statute requires that human growth and development curriculum "emphasizes that abstinence from sexual activity before marriage is the only reliable way to prevent pregnancy…and provides instruction on parental responsibility and the socioeconomic benefits of marriage for adults and their children."

Marriage increases the likelihood that fathers and mothers have good relationships with their children. Children are most likely to enjoy family stability when they are born into a married family. Married couples tend to build more wealth on average than singles or cohabiting couples. Marriage reduces poverty, failure in school, criminal activity, abuse of any kind, early sexual activity, and material hardship for disadvantaged women and their children. Children who live with their own two married parents enjoy better physical health, on average, than do children in other family forms. Marriage is associated with reduced rates of alcohol and substance abuse for both adults and teens.

While marriage is only one of several lifestyle choices that all students should have an opportunity to consider, teachers and administrators in the school district must always love and respect every child as they reach adulthood and make their own lifestyle choices.

We, the undersigned parents, students, and taxpayers within the Wausau school district urge the Wausau school board to adopt a human growth and development curriculum that emphasizes the value of abstinence until marriage and teaches the socioeconomic benefits of marriage for adults and children.
