It is estimated that over 100,00 people in Ontario are working in illegal unpaid internships every year. Students are working full-time hours alongside paid individuals without compensation. They are performing work for which others would be paid.

In 2014, the government of Ontario assessed 65 businesses with internship programs across all industries and "42% of the companies did not comply with the law" (International Business Times).

Interns are seeking valuable experience to obtain a foothold in their field and succeed in future careers. With hopes to gain valuable experience and potentially be offered a job at a company, interns are signing up by the hundreds.

Large profit-making corporations are hiring interns and aren't paying them. This is illegal under the Employment Standards Act set forth by the Ministry of Labour.
