Big Reason I lasted 1 semester at Goucher was because the administration silenced student voices and I didnt want to be part of a school that treated its students that way.

Shame on Goucher’s administration. As an academic institution that teaches about the importance of nonviolent protests, the history of genocide, and the threat of fascism to democracy, you should be supporting current students’ efforts to apply their learning and stand up for what is humane and right in this moment.

Freddie Gray was murdered my second semester at Goucher. In response, students organized protests on campus, created artistic works, and found ways to get groups of us into the city to march for the people of Baltimore and racial justice. This was a formative experience that completely shaped the way my Goucher education went on to be — what I learned in my classes went hand in hand with why I show up at these moral protests. One night, at around 10 or 11 pm, after a group of students got back to campus after attending a protest in Baltimore, we were greeted warmly by a member in administration, and she bought the group pizza. She talked to us about our experience — why people made the decision to go, what this meant to them, how they were feeling. This is one of my fondest memories of Goucher.

It is shameful that Goucher puts the interests of the apartheid "state" of Israel that has routinely mass murdered Palestinian civilians for more than 7 decades over the actual safety of its Jewish students. Jewish students should never be forced to be aligned with Zionism to feel safe and seen in their Judaism. They deserve better than Hillel. We all deserve better than to be a part of an institution that aligns itself with a genocidal colonial project, especially when Goucher prides itself on global diversity and awareness. It goes against everything I was taught here.

We have, for the past 6 months, witnessed an ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people. Goucher’s refusal to take a stance against genocide and on top of that, punish students brave enough to speak out, dismantling installations commemorating the atrocities committed by Israel against Palestinians, is nothing short of disgraceful.

I was a part-time instructor at Goucher. And I’ve been very connected to the community via friends and family as well. Goucher must do better!
