Support Roseburn-West Coates Protected Cycle Route

At least 6% of journeys to work are taken by cycling, therefore at least 6% of transport costs should be spent on provisions for cyclists, currently it's around 1.9%. Cyclists pay tax and council tax too and need to be provided for.

There is already significant congestion and pollution from cars along this route, these proposals will actually do something to reduce this problem.

I am a local to Roseburn and I can see many benefits in the proposal. I believe it will encourage many people to use bikes instead of card. It will make it safer and encourage family cycles . This will improve the community feel of Roseburn and actually encourage locals to use local shops and facilities more.

I support this scheme but it will be important to ensure that junctions, crossings etc. are clearly signed so that users know who has priority when they are being used e.g. will a car or bike have priority when going over one of the Copenhagen junctions?

I fully support the cycle path. I'm a cyclist and a driver so have the perspective of both sides of the argument and believe the cycle path would really benefit the area and is well worth the money spent.

When similar schemes were proposed in Groningen, Netherlands almost 50 years ago there was strong opposition from shopkeepers. Now they are demanding more cycling facilities because they brought about such a huge increase in footfall.

Ultimately the increased provision of cycle lanes this is good for the city and good for the health of the populace. Good for the city because their proliferation reduces pollution, (hopefully) reduces the number of cars on the roads and makes Edinburgh and cleaner place in which to live. All forward thinking cities in Europe, North American and South America are reducing the amount of cars on their roads because the future of urban living depends on it. Edinburgh needs to keep pace with rival cities in their places. As for the health benefits, they go without saying.

For commuting by bicycle the convoluted route would not be used. The cars parking there at the moment often cause large tail backs to the west so the cycle lane would help ease that situation.

I am not a cyclist but can see the obvious merits of the Roseburn-West Coates Protected Cycle Route. I live in a neighbourhood close to the proposed route where children already cycle to school via Roseburn. The proposed route is also used by many adult cyclist in this small residential area. The extensive housing development at Devon Place surrounded by large offices raises further the need for a protected route. The arguments made by local shopkeepers re delivery and loss of business is not convincing. This proposal avoids the obvious dangers of cyclists crossing tram lines. Surely the priority ought to be to encourage safer cycling.

I wholly support the council's attempts to encourage active travel. This will only succeed if these activities feel safer and more pleasant. I think that the immediate area would be improved by the greater numbers of people walking and cycling through it, many of whom will probably make use of local businesses for shopping, café stops etc. The route via Balbirnie Place should be maintained but it is no substitute for the direct route proposed along Weste Coates and Haymarket Terrace. The additional benefit for cyclists would be that the new route would enable them to avoid the dangers of the tramlines at Haymarket.

This is an essential part of the network making our city safer to cycle. More and more people are cycling, and with changes like this far more will in the future. We need this cycle lane! We can't let a few people who object stop what is such an essential change.

Great cause!

I welcome the proposed segregated east-west cycle route across Edinburgh. This is highly desirable from a safety aspect, and should help to encourage more people to use a bicycle in the city centre. Too many currently are intimidated by the volume of motor vehicles with which cyclists have to share road space.
