Let's consider conferences in both the fall and the winter. 5 minutes at the beginning of the year is not sufficient contact with teachers.

We get so few opportunities to find out how our children are doing and what areas they need to work on that further removing this only opportunity to talk to teachers would be disastrous.

In order for parents to know how their kids are doing in school you need the teachers to interact with the parents not the student. Are you really expecting a 11-13 year old to access someone else child. Please reinstate parent teacher conferences immediately.

How on earth is this even happening? I am completely against this!! We pay plenty of taxes in elmhurst and should not have to even have a question about wether or not our teachers should take the time to talk to us about our kids' progress!!

I found the student led conference a failure. No teacher had reviewed my child's slides and many areas were blank. I talk to my child about school everyday. It would be beneficial to talk to the actual teachers if only for 5 minutes each.

How was this decision arrived at? What could possibly be the benefit of omitting the teacher part of parent teacher conferences? How does the school expect the parent teacher partnership to effectively work when the teacher can't even make them selves available to discuss their progress? What is next - doing away with the formal grading system?

Parent-teacher conferences are an essential communication tool for all involed in fostering the growth of a child and in my experience, especially for a student/ child that may be too shy or anxious in "opening up" to their teachers or parents. Alot can be learned in even a 5-minute exchange between the most influential people in a child's life. The middle school years are a crucial time of developmental in which parents and teachers should work together to navigate educational and social success for our children. In addition, a "no" parent -teacher conference environment could prove a logistical nightmare for teachers if all parents starting contacting them individually for before or after school meetings - which is something I would feel compelled to do if the conferences were eliminated.
