April 13, 2017 -- Sandburg’s principal announced this week that the school will return to parent-teacher conferences in the fall.
The announcement came as a complete surprise to those of us spearheading the petition campaign. Especially surprising is that the plan includes parent-teacher conferences only, without any student-led conferences. Since the fall, we had been pushing for a creative compromise including both student-led and parent-teacher conferences.
We are very pleased with the principal’s decision as it reflects the value we place on connecting with the teachers who are so important in our children’s lives. While the principal’s announcement points to challenges with the new middle school block schedule as a motivator, we know that this announcement would not have happened without the groundswell of supporters that included people like you inside and outside of Sandburg.
THANK YOU for being willing to stand up for what you believe in by signing the petition, sharing ideas on social media, talking with your own networks, contacting administrators/school board members, and showing up and speaking up at BOE meetings. You have made a difference!
Personally, we have learned so much during this journey. Two of our biggest takeaways: stay informed and get involved. All of you have inspired us. Let’s continue to pay attention and speak up. Attend meetings. Get to know our administrators and school board members. Working together — parents, administration, school board — we will continue to foster an atmosphere of achievement and growth for all D205 students.

This fall, Sandburg Middle School replaced parent-teacher conferences with something called "student-led" conferences. In doing so, parents were not offered a forum for meeting in-person with all of their child's teachers as they have in the past.
Student-led conferences are not an acceptable replacement for parent-teacher conferences.
Sandburg's principal has communicated that she will not reinstate parent-teacher conferences for the 2017-18 school year. Superintendent Dr. David Moyer is standing by the principal's decision. His support of what's happening at Sandburg could have implications for how the rest of our school district handles conferences.

As an educator myself, I see a lot of value in parent-teacher conferences. I think it's an important opportunity for parents and the teacher to meet and talk one-on-one (as opposed to a Meet-the-Teacher event for all parents of students in the class).
Honest conversations without the student present are important. Parents should share teacher insights with their student while reinforcing good behaviors and coach for improvements. Parents should inspect what they expect
I found the student led conference a failure. No teacher had reviewed my child's slides and many areas were blank. I talk to my child about school everyday. It would be beneficial to talk to the actual teachers if only for 5 minutes each.
I see Parent Teacher conferences as a time to sit with my children's teachers and receive valuable feedback about their education. I do not believe my child or any middle school student is truly capable of giving as meaningful feedback without extensive teacher guidance.
I would be in favor of traditional parent-teacher conferences (double for English since it is a double period) in the fall with a student-led conference in the spring. Otherwise there is no one-on-one, face-to-face conference at any time during the year.
As a parent and an educator, I do not understand how you can justify this decision.
As a past parent of a child who went to Hawthorne, Sandburg and York and a retired school teacher(40 years of service), I feel it is important for a parent and a teacher to establish a relationship in which to understand the child and keep that communication open . Everyone gets the same information and helps the child meet his potential.

Though I enjoyed hearing my daughter's thought on her goals, I had no idea what the teacher's perspective was. I have discussions with my child. This format was disappointing in that there was no communication with the adult in charge of my child's education.
